Our cycling day launch.

On the morning of our cycling day we went into class and got high visibility jackets. Then we went outside for a group photo.

After that everyone with a bike got there bike and joined the end of the line. A few of the people in our schools parents went for the cycle too. The day before we had our cycling day the parents had one. When the left the junior infants and senior infants got their bikes and cycled around the yard. A few people fell off their bikes so we helped them up and they continued cycling. Awhile later we went inside for something to eat and then went back out.

Not too long after that the others returned. They had gone on a 3 mile long cycle. When we all came in we got something to eat and drink, then we all got an apple and a drink. Later that day we had a raffle. In the raffle there were bike locks, bike bells, bike reflectors, bike lights and many more bike stuff. At two o’clock sixth, fifth and fourth class went out and played rounder’s. I really enjoyed our cycling day. I think everyone else did too.

Cycling courses

On Monday 21^st and Tuesday 22^nd March 2011 children from 1st class upwards took part in a cycling course in our school. Each classroom spent a whole day cycling. The children learned lots of new tricks and most importantly they learned about being safe when cycling. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the courses and had a new helmet to keep at the end of the day.

St. Patrick's Day Parade

All children from 1st class upwards were asked to make a costume using nothing but recyclable materials. Each child brought their costume into school and had the opportunity to model it for the teachers and other pupils. The best costumes were chosen to take part in the St. Patrick's Day parade. Well done to the people who put so much work into their costumes and thank you to the parents who helped out on the day.

Sinbad and the Sea Pirates!

St. Brigid wanted to build a church. She didn’t have any land. She asked the chieftain for some land. He said “you can have as much land as your cloak can cover”. He was mean and he laughed. She put down her cloak. It grew bigger and bigger and bigger. She laughed. Now she could build a church.

Games for a day!

On 22nd October 2010 our school took part in National Games Day. Each child brought in €2 to raise money for charity. We put a booklet together, which showed what we did on the day. Wizzy Wasp came to visit!

On Friday 15th October 2010, Wizzy Wasp came to visit our school! We won this Wizzy visit because we worked really hard at our exercises and we made some lovely artwork for Wizzy to see. When Wizzy Wasp came into the halla he congratulated us and he demonstrated some different exercises that we did during the programme. Wizzy gave everybody a badge and a high five to say well done! Swimming for Wizzy Wasp

Every week for five weeks we go to Clonea swimming. This is part of our Wizzy Wasp daily activities for an hour. We enjoy every minute of swimming with our fellow classmates. We have a great time learning all the different ways of swimming. There is a class for people who can’t swim and those who can. Our swimming instructors make it easier for us to learn and enjoy every minute of our swimming experience. After our swimming lessons we have a great time playing in the shallow end.

Football for Wizzy Wasp.

Every day at school most of our class mates play football at break times. Which are between 11 o’clock until quarter past 11 and half 12 until 1 o’clock. First we pick our teams and make them fair. Then we pick our goal keepers and put people in their positions that they are best at. Our usual goalkeepers are Mairéad and Joshuah. We all take turns of taking forty-fives, kick outs and frees. If someone misses a point or goal we just say hard luck better luck next time. We have great fun playing football. It’s not about winning it’s about teamwork and having fun. Our teacher is very kind and lets us use the Gaelic football.

Cycling for Wizzy Wasp

Every day some people go cycling to school. It is a very fun sport and it is enjoyable to do. It is an exercise we do for Wizzy Wasp. It saves money and petrol by cycling and not going in the car. We normally go cycling in school. Lots of people in the school like this fun sport. When you go cycling you should always wear a helmet and if it gets dark you should also wear a reflective jacket.

The School Doctor
The doctor came to our school. He gave us an injection. I thought it would hurt but teacher said it wouldn’t. I was not sure .My teacher said it was a small injection. I went to see the doctor .The doctor showed me the needle. It was small. Then the doctor gave me an injection in my arm. It did not hurt .I went back to class I got my lunch and I got a lollipop from the teacher. She said I was very brave.

Characters from ‘Albert and the Magician’.

My favourite Character is Fionnuala. I like fionnuala because she is always pretty. But I don’t like her sometimes because she is mean to Albert. And I loved the end because she got in trouble. But she was still a big sister. She could have helped him once or twice. And in one part she was pretending to be nice to get Albert scared. Fionnuala was very proud about her pretty pink little nose. She used it to say something most of the time. Albert called fionnuala pudgy smarty pants! Fionnuala made Albert scared about the magician. Albert and the Magician!

We read a novel called Albert and the magician .This is about a boy called Albert. Albert is afraid of magicians and one comes to his school!
One day Albert was at school and the head master Mr. Curry (His nickname is the chicken) told the whole school to come to the assembly hall. So they all went into the assembly hall and he told them that a magician was coming to their school soon and they were all to bring in fifty pence. Albert was very confused because he did not know what a magician was!
When Albert got home he asked his big sister Fionnuala what a magician was. She told him that a magician was a man that went around taking 7 year old boys and he brought them to a far away land and if they shouted for their mamas they will not be able to hear them. Otherwise they would turn them into frogs.
Albert was very scared that night because of what Fionnuala said to him. In the morning Albert had eggs. His brother the twins had eggs as well but he threw them on the floor!!! Then he opened the danger press and was about to drink poison. Albert saw but didn’t say anything then mammy turned around and saw and asked Albert why he didn’t say anything. Albert said he would like to give his magician money to the third world. After school Albert’s dad said that they will give him another fifty pence again so he can see the magician because he gave his money to the third world.
When Albert was at school the magician came on his dirt bike. He had lots of boxes and bags. Albert didn’t know that the little man was the magician. The magician asked Albert to take some boxes to the hall. On his way the bag talked to him. Later on the magician told Albert to come on stage. Then he put him in a box and said some magic words. Albert came in the door and everyone jumped to see him! Then the magician called him to do another trick. Albert was not sure if he should go up but he did and the magician gave him five fifty pence pieces! Then the chicken saw Fionnuala sticking out her tongue at Albert and he gave out to her. She had to go to his office after the magician was gone home. Fionnuala was in lots of trouble in the end!

Girls Camogie

On the 5th of March 2009 the girls from 3rd, 4th and 5th class went to Ballinameela to play a Camogie tournament. There were five teams Aglish, Modeligo, Kinsalebeg, Coolnasmear and Grange. There was a draw at the start to see who would go through to the semi-final because we couldn’t all play each other. Aglish won the draw so we went straight into the semi-final. We then played Modeligo in the semi-final. We lost by one goal. The final score was 3-2 to Modeligo. The people on our team were Maggie, Anita, Naomi, Rebecca, Lorna, Elaine, Chloe and Megan. The over all winner was Coolnasmear. We had a great day.

He said how ever much land the cloak covers is how much land she could have. St Brigid took off her cloak and laid it on the ground.The cloak got bigger and bigger.Therefore St. Brigid was able to build the church.

Saint Brigids feast day is on the 1st of February. Saint Brigid was born near Dundalk. Saint Brigids mammy died when she was a young girl. How to make tea

What you will need
You will need sugar, tea bag, hot water, milk, kettle, spoon and last but not least a cup
1.first of all put water in the kettle and switch it on.

2.get the cup for when the kettle is boiled.

3.put a tea bag in the cup. When the kettle is boiled pour the water in.

4.when the water goes black take the tea bag out of the cup with the spoon.

5.after putting in the water and taking out the tea bag put in the amount of milk you would like.

6.then if you would like you can stir it.

7.then put in the sugar in. the more you put in the sweeter it will be.the more sugar the more it will rot your teeth.

8.now relax and drink your tea.

How to make apple tart
Ingredients
You will need cooking apples, sugar, flour, sugar, milk, and margarine

Method
First get a mixing bowl add flour and margarine. Then mix for 1-3 minutes Add water if it is still hard then add a little more. Get your cooking apples and cut them into tiny pieces. Then take your pastry out and roll it .Put the pastry over a glass bowl and add in your sliced apples Then roll out the rest of your pastry and put it over it. With a knife put a little line in the middle and pop it in the oven.

How to make cookies

Ingredients:
2 eggs,
1 cup butter flavour shortening,
¾ cup white sugar,
¾ cup brown sugar,
2 teaspoons vanilla extract,
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour,

2 cups milk
chocolate chips

Method:
Heat up your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease cookie sheets.
In a big bowl mix everything but the eggs, vanilla, flour, baking soda, and salt. Then 1 by 1 put in the egg, then vanilla, then all the rest and stir. Put on the chocolate chips then bake for 8 to 10 minutes (until light brown). Allow cookies to cool for 5 minutes before eating.

8. Pour the hot water into the mug.
9. Then pour milk in the mug.
10. Stir it.
11. Then drink it and relax.

Bananas Cake

300g flour
Baking powder 3 spoons full
A ¼ spoon of salt full
150g Brown sugar
3 eggs
3 or 4 bananas
150g butter
150g nuts
1/8 of milk

You put the butter in a bowl and stir it until it gets creamy. Put the eggs into the bowl with butter and stir it. Then put the nuts in and the salt. Put the baking powder into the flour and stir the flour and the baking powder. Smash the bananas and put them into the bowl with the butter and eggs and nuts and salt. Put the sugar into the bowl too. Then add 3 spoons of flour and a little bit of milk. And again put 3 spoons full of flour and milk and flour and milk the whole time until it is all gone stirring all the time. Put it in to the oven for 20 minus leave it in the oven and then it is finished. Then you can eat it.

Chocolate food cake

Ingredients; 13/4 cups of flour,11/2 teaspoons of baking soda, ½ of baking powder,1 teaspoon of salt,11/2 cups of sugar,4 ounces of unsweetened chocolate,1 cup of milk,3/4 cup of melted butter,3 large eggs,1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract.

Heat the oven up to 350 degrees. Grease and flour the cake pan 29-inch round it. In a small saucepan boil 1 cup water. Put a small mixing bowl over the water and add chocolate. Turn the heat low and melt the chocolate. Remove the bowl and let it cool down. Measure the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and sugar into a large mixing bowl. Mix the dry ingredients together. Add chocolate milk and melted butter with the flour mixture. Mix together and beat for 1 minute with a electric mixer. Add eggs and vanilla to the cake for another 3 minute with the mixer. Pour the cake batter into pans. Bake the cake from 30 to 35 minute. Test the cake with a toothpick. When the cake is done take it out of the oven. Let it cool for 10 minute then frost it. Then enjoy

The Hasbro Decorations

On the 16th of December five people from our classroom got picked to go up to St. Georges Court in Waterford City. The school had to make decorations to hang on the Christmas tree in Waterford. Every decoration that we brought was hung on the tree and every decoration that was hung tree Hasbro were giving a board game to a children’s charity. The five people were Claire, Julie, Liam, Mark and Naomi. Breda and Kathleen brought us to Waterford. When we were finished hanging up the decorations we had our photograph taken by Kathleen and Breda. We were given lollipops for everyone in the school and we sang a Christmas song for the lady that worked for the Hasbro Giving Tree. When we were hung up the decorations we went to Burger King to get something to eat. After that we went home. When we arrived back at school we told everyone about the trip and gave them their lollipops. We had a brilliant day we hope we can participate again next year.

Our 4th Green Flag

Our 4th Green flag was based on Transport. We had to try and get people to cut down on CO2 emissions, ways of doing this was to get people to walk or cycle short distances. We tried to get people carpooling. For a week in every term we did a transport survey. We encouraged as many as possible to walk or cycle to school. We got all our families and the community to become involved in reducing our carbon footprint.

All our hard work paid off when the Minister for environment and local government Mr. John Gormley hoisted our 4th Green Flag in June 2008. We also prepared a power point presentation of our progress in the last 8 years. Mr Gormley gave a speech after the power point. When he had finished his speech, Junior Infants presented him with the flag and they got their photograph taken with Mr. Gormley.

All the pupils, teachers and parents and relatives went outside to see Mr Gormley hoist our 4th green flag. When he had hoisted our green flag we went inside and the adults went into the hall for tea, cakes and sandwiches. While the pupils went down to a classroom where we were allowed watch a film called Mr. Bean’s holiday. We were given orange and a packet of crisps we were also given buns and biscuits from the hall. We were then allowed to go home with our parents when they were leaving. It was a very successful day.

The Rainbow Spinner

On the 6th of November we came into school and the boys went to a match. Sir said we were going to do an experiment on the rainbow spinner. He gave us a piece of cardboard each. We used our compass to draw a circle 5cm radius. We were put into groups of two. The two groups in sixth class were Mallaidh and Julie and Bridgette and Claire. Sir gave us two wires, a battery and a motor. We had to make a circuit so we joined the two wires onto each side of the motor and the battery on the other sides of the wires. That made the motor move. We then put the rainbow spinner on top of the motor and it spun around. The colour we saw was white because white light is the seven colours of the spectrum. What we were trying to prove here is that the seven colours of the spectrum made white light. Nobody knew if this fact was true so we experimented on it. It seemed that it is true. Every one was amazed. Now they knew what was going on and they understood that the seven colours of the spectrum make white light.

Department Report Highly Complimentary Of Interactive White Board Use

The Department of Education and Science has commended the teachers, parents and pupils of a small, county Waterford school for fund-raising for hi-tech classroom tools which have made learning easier and more fun.

It makes it one of the most technologically advanced schools in the country.

The Department openly commended the use of interactive white boards in Irish classrooms, endorsing independent research which shows the hi-tech tool helps boost pupil concentration levels and makes learning fun.

A Department report Aglish National School commends its principal, staff, board and parents who fund-raised to install interactive white boards in all of its classrooms. It adds that the use of the board left children more motivated, interested and stimulated than a traditional, chalk board.

The report backs up independent research carried out by Wexford-based company, Prim-Ed Publishing, which shows its hi-tech, Promethean whiteboards stimulate pupils far more than traditional black-boards.

The Whole School Evaluation report on Aglish National School in county Waterford says integrating such technology in the classroom not only boosts pupil participation but brings subjects such as Irish to life. Prim Ed's interactive white boards are also a massive boost in a multi-class situation, the report adds.

"Teachers' success in ensuring pupil interest and participation in lessons is due to the stimulating methodologies employed by the staff and the highly commendable use made of resources, including, in particular, the computerised interactive whiteboards," the Inspector's report into the school says.

"In addition, the teachers are working with laudable dedication on placing as many resources as possible on to computer hard disc and thus having material available instantly for the whole class, when required, on the interactive whiteboard," the report continues.

"Motivation and interest are maintained by means of stimulating methodologies that emphasise the key curricular principles of active learning, environment-based learning, differentiation and integration of knowledge. In addition, pupils' attention is maintained through the very effective use made of resources," the report stresses.

Ronan Culloo of Aglish NS in Cappoquin, county Waterford, said they are thrilled with their board and with Prim-Ed's service. "These are the greatest and best teaching aid and learning support which has come on the market. The children have really taken enthusiastically to being taught with the interactive board. Their attention is greater and they enjoy interacting with the board."

Prim-Ed's Publishing's managing director, Seamus McGuinness, said teaching young children using Prim-Ed's interactive white boards has never been so engaging and exciting. "When Prim-Ed's white boards are used, all eyes are to the front. Younger children learn to read and write with fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters and scenery. They can develop storyboards which encourage discussion and debate.

"Maths is brought to life using dices, coins, grids and graphs. History is brought to life before your eyes. One of the most exciting elements of our Activprimary teaching solution for teachers and pupils is the attention grabbing and time saving resource library that helps teachers to create dynamic lessons across the National Curriculum," Mr McGuinness added.

Irish Green-School Grabs Recycling School Of The Year Award

An Irish Green-School was awarded the Repak Recycling School of the Year Award 2007.

The school in question is Aglish National School in Waterford in the South East of Ireland who have already been awarded the Green Flag three times by An Taisce! The Award is designed to reward a school that has gone to extra lengths to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

A Black-Tie Gala Dinner event was organised to honour Aglish National School and the other Recycling Award Winners in Dublin in October where the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley T.D., presented the awards.

Aglish National School is a four teacher primary school in Cappoquin, Co Waterford. The students and staff along with Principal Ronal Culloo are a shining example to us all. They recycle everything from aluminium cans, paper, cardboard, cartons and plastic to cartridges, batteries and lunch containers.

All the while, the Green Schools committee is busily monitoring all activities ensuring good practises are upheld. Convent Primary School, Bathview, Mallow, Co. Cork and Corrandulla National School in Galway were joint finalists with innovative and fun initiatives taking place at both schools. Aglish NS is 4 teacher school with approximately 60 students. Principal Ronan Culloo and the rest of the school have been awarded the Green Flag an impressive 3 times and are currently working to receive their fourth this school year! Aglish N.S. is a two teacher rural primary school located in west Waterford.

With regard to water conservation, Aglish N.S. looked at toilet cisterns, through which they found a lot of water was being wasted unnecessarily. They decided to put rocks in the cisterns in order to reduce the volume of water used in each flush. They were careful with the rocks they selected, they made sure to measure the right amount of space so that there was enough water in the cistern for one good flush without having to flush twice. Therefore, they weighed the rocks collected outside, so they would all take up the same capacity in the cisterns. They filled a 1000 millilitres (1 litre) jug and put rocks in cisterns. The water rose to 1150 ml, so the rocks saved 150 ml per flush. Aglish N.S. worked out the average number of flushes per day i.e. 90 flushes. They knew they were saving 150 ml per flush, therefore through this simple no cost measure, the school was saving 13,500 ml (or 13.5 litres) of water per day. This works out at 67.5 litres per week, and with approximately 36 weeks in a school year, the school is saving 2,430 litres per year!

Other measures to conserve water:

Every pupil makes sure to turn taps off properly and keeps an eye open for any leaks.
The school harvests rainwater for watering plants and flowers.
The kettle is filled up with the amount of water that will be used.
Cartons, paintbrushes, etc. are washed in a plugged sink to avoid constant running water.

Their Green Code is D.W.W. (Don't Waste Water). The code was agreed at one of the Green-Schools meetings during a suggestion and brainstorming session. The pupils take responsibility for the various actions needed to implement the code and integrate it into school life.

Aglish N.S. have continued their work on Litter & Waste and Energy. They are monitoring closely the amount of material being recycled, cost of electricity bills, the volume of oil used for heating. These figures are recorded monthly and go back until 2002, therefore enabling them to look at trends over a four year period.
